The Magnolia West Men's Powerlifting Team competed at the Regional Championship meet in Dickinson Texas today. The mustangs all did an outstanding job at the meet, as each lifter beat their own personal best total.
The West powerlifting team this year is young, but strong. 5 athletes qualified for the Regional Meet, and the mustangs did not have any seniors compete in a varsity powerlifting meet this year.
The mustangs were led by Sophomore Luke Mcaffety who took home second place in the 198lb weight class and qualified for the State Championship Meet in Abilene on March 24. Luke had the best squat of his entire weight class at 560lbs. He also set personal best lifts in the bench press (300lbs) and deadlift (500lbs). Luke finished with a total of 1360, which was 50lbs greater than his previous personal best total.
Also placing for the mustangs was Joey Minassian, who took home 5th place in the 198lb weight class. Joey had a personal best squat of 550. He also tied his best bench with 275lbs, and shattered his personal best deadlift with a lift of 520lbs. Overall Joey lifted a total of 1345lbs, which was 90lbs greater than his previous personal best total.
Jonathan Garcia competed in a very competitive 220lb weight class, where the top 7 lifters all qualified for the state meet. Jonathan set a personal best in squat with 550, and as a result improved his best overall total by 20lbs by reaching 1380. (Benched 325, Deadlift 505).
Ian Keck competed in the 132lb weight class and set personal best lifts across the board. Ian squatted 365, benched 210, and deadlifted 385. He lifted a total of 960lbs, to beat his previous best total by 25lbs.
Cody Costello also competed for the mustangs in the 148lb weight class. Cody set personal records in all 3 lifts as well. Cody squatted 385, benched 240, and deadlifted 360 for a total of 985lbs. He beat his previous best total by 50lbs.
Overall these athletes did an outstanding job competing, and representing Magnolia West High School. We could not be more proud of them. We look forward to more great things next year as our young lifters take on leadership roles.
